In the bright Hamburg sunshine, this morning’s CSI5* Baker Tilly Roelfs Trophy was won by Ireland’s Billy Twomey and his beautiful dark bay mount Royale du Rouet in front of thousands of cheering spectators, 2nd was Andres Rodriguez (VEN) and Darlon van Groenhove, and 3rd Jan Wernke (GER) and Forry Deluxe.
Of the 45 starters, many collected four faults around Frank Rothenburger’s testing two-phase course, with only 13 jumping a double clear. Andres Rodriguez led the class from 12th to go in the draw with a fast time of 35.67s. Wernke came close to bettering him with 36.46s, but Billy Twomey, 8th last to go, knew exactly what was needed to win and made up time wherever possible to stop the clock at 34.97s.
A strong double clear performance from LGCT Ranking Leader Eric Lamaze (CAN), winner of two big Grand Prix over the last ten days, makes him very much the man to beat in tomorrow’s LGCT Hamburg Grand Prix, Round Three of the record-breaking 2014 series. Lamaze leads just ahead of Emanuele Gaudiano (ITA), with Edwina Tops-Alexander (AUS) just one point behind.
Bassem Hassan Mohammed of Qatar, 4th in the LGCT Ranking, and Dutchman Gerco Schröder, currently lying equal 9th with Constant van Paesschen (BEL), were also placed in the top seven of this morning’s class with double clears. Tomorrow’s Grand Prix will be a fierce and closely fought battle – the current LGCT Top Ten are all within 20 points of each other. With the Grand Prix victor taking 40 points, we could well see a new leader of the LGCT 2014 series by tomorrow evening.
