Portuguese rider Luciana Diniz opened the Spruce Meadows Masters curtain by winning the $35,000 Telus Cup in a formidable jump-off round.
The extensive 63 pairs group’s on course designed by Venezuelan Leopoldo Palacios, had the full protagonism of Luciana Diniz with her 13-year-old mare Fit For Fun 13 (For Pleasure x Fabriano), completing the round in 39.32 seconds and taking 50 FEI Ranking Points.
The battle for the first class was limited to the 10 classified riders, where Luciana Diniz scored a narrow 37-second lead over the biggest money-maker and winner in Spruce Meadows history, Canada’s Eric Lamaze.
In case of Eric Lamaze had to settle for the second place, not managing to win the highest honors, despite classifying his two horses, but it was with the 11-year old gelding Chacco Kid (Cacco-Blue x Com On), with the which managed to secure 45 World Ranking Points in 39.69 seconds.
The double clear round extended to fourth place with Egyptian Sameh El Dahan taking third alongside the 10-year-old mare WKD Diva (Balouradp x T Hors La Loi II) in 39.78 seconds and Swiss Pius Schwizer in 42.57 seconds finished fourth, accompanied by the 9-year-old mare Chidame Z (Chippendale Z x Quidan de Revel).
Top five was completed by Swiss Olympic gold medalist Steve Guerdat, making a fasted round in 39.49 seconds with the 11-year-old mare Cayetana (Robin II x Papillon Rouge), but knocked down a pole totaling 4 fouls.
For Latino Ranking highlighted was for Brazilian rider Yuri Mansur exceeding the time oand penalized with 1 fault next to its 11-year-old mare Babylotte (Dollar Du Murier x Concorde), obtaining a time of 63.24 seconds in the 11th place.
