Again the three-time American Olympic medalist and world number 2 McLain Ward finished as the winner, dominating the $86,600 LAFARGE Cup.
Representing the seventh victory of the 2017 Spruce Meadows Summer Tournament, McLain Ward alongside 15-year-old gelding HH Carlos Z (Chellano Z x Voltaire) owned by Double H Farm, completed the course designed by Venezuelan Leopoldo Palacios evaluated by Table C in 66.60 seconds, getting 80 World Ranking Points in his comfortable victory.
McLain Ward is undoubtedly the most successful rider this year in Calgary, also with his result today he avoided that two-time Olympic medalist Leslie Howard repeated for second year in a row at the LAFARGE Cup, being relegated to second place with the 9-year-old mare Donna Speciale (Cavalier x Concorde) in a time of 69.99 seconds and for third place Vani Khosla completed the one-two-three for the United States recording a time of 72.71 seconds with the 12-year-old stallion Billy Mexico (Cevin Z x Le Mexico).
For the Latino Ranking Francisco Pasquel was fourth in 73.24 seconds, which allowed him to add 55 FEI Ranking Points accompanied by the 10-year-old gelding Naranjo (Robin II Z x Quappa HN) while two of the fastest rounds escorted him with Irish rider Concor Swail in fifth place alongside 12-year-old mare Flower (Bon Ami x Randel Z) in 69.49 seconds but added 4 seconds for a takedown pole to total 73.49 seconds and four-time US Olympic medalist Bezzie Madden was sixth in 70.10 seconds plus 4 seconds with the 8-year-old gelding Con Baggio (Contagion x Golliath Life).
